Greetings all
Just wondering of those who use these cookers if you can use the standard fire lighting cubes we can get from supermarkets/hardware stores? Do they contaminate your food/brew?
The fuel tablets burn pretty smokey/dirty, however if its just a case of cosmetics then would be happy to use them instead. They are much easy to buy and alot cheaper, they also burn alot hotter and more intensely than the Hexamine variety.

Honestly, with the price of little gas burners and pots from China I wouldn't bother.

But if you do want the hexi tabs, they sell them at army surplu cheap as chips.

As Tommy says army surplus is the place to go for hex tsblets. Have had good dealings with kiwi disposals
I'll sometimes take my stainless mug & a hex tab on winter day hunts, find a couple of stones to sit your mug on, hex tab underneath & presto a hot cuppa soup/tea for lunch. Bit of tin foil over the top while it boils.
I have eaten quite a few meals from over hex but these days even though I still carry some, it is the back up to my backup for gas.
Yep its convenient and burns hotter and cleaner than fire lighters like rushy I still carry some for day hunts takes less room than the gas.
Awsome, magic all! Fuel tabs it is then! Yep have got a stash of Hex tablets from Armyoutdoors prev. kiwi disposals, however only did so as was already ordering some other bits of kit. The fuel tabs are just alot cheaper and can get them anytime when out and about.
Re army and outdoors, bought quite a few bits and pieces from them and only once had a bad experience. Got some really awsome gear from them, some of the army surplus stuff really is way underrated. Just got a couple of gortex jackets from them and there absolutely bomb proof, very impressed with them!
Oh and re the gas stoves, yep got quite a few of them but when out for a day hike i prefer to just take along me cup and the hex stove as there small and light. Thanks again all, a wealth of resource!!!

the coleman ones from H&F work but be aware they will break down and go all soft and leaky if left exposed to the air.
yip gas is quicker and cleaner but a mug and hexy is easy in daybag and if you leave it behind not a biggie.
Gas canister, cooker, gas stand (tripodthing) spork, lighter and Jeds coffee bag fit in 800ml tooks cup. Fits in side pocket of a pack, yet to find anything betterQuote:

There are really good Tribrids of a spoon/fork and knife at great prices. Trouble is, the Tribrids don't come with instructions and I've never figured out how to use the fork and knife at he same time! :huh:
Just stumbled on this old thread. Don't know why they'd confiscate the cooker @Dundee - there is no fume residue to worry about with hexamine (I witnessed "them" confiscate the empty container off a petrol cooker off a hapless backpacker in 2004). Maybe it was the sharp edges - could be argued to be a weapon if you detach one of the wings and palm it!

Hexamine btw is a precursor to RDX, a smell-free component of Semtex and C4, so if you buy too many of them in the UK shop owners are meant to make a call to the Home Office. Hexamine has also been used orally since the late 1800s against urinary tract infections. It's the lightest of all carry option for cooking (gas canisters weigh the same as their content for instance!). Hexamine is best for just making a brew as the flame is hard to control for simmering. And then there's the no-indoor-use problem. The soot, no problem as long as you know which side of the pot you eat from. (-:
